removal and control services in NJ
What exactly is a bat ?
Bats are very much like human because they are mammals,
that have hair and give birth to living
young and nurture them on milk from mammary
glands. There are more than 900 species of
bats in the worldwide and they inhabit more
in tropical regions.
First there are the myths and
misconceptions about bats in general...
myth 1: "All bats have rabies"
During the past forty years fewer than forty people in
the US are known to have contracted rabies from bats.
Most, importantly less than 1/2 of 1 percent of bats
actually carry the rabies virus.
myth 2: "Bats get tangled in a
person's hair"
A bats echolocate (high-pitched sounds are emitted
and their echoes are used to determine the direction and
distance of objects) allows them to see better. The
reason for why most bats come close to a person's head
is when they're trying to catch insects.
myth 3: "Bats suck your blood"
There are vampire bats and they feed on the blood of
warm-blooded animals such as birds, horses and cattle.
They are found in usually year-round warm regions like
Mexico, Central America and South America. A bat only
sucks about two tablespoons of blood every day because
that's all it needs, so the loss of blood to a prey
animal is small and rarely causes any harm.
myth 4:
"Bats are blind"
Bats can't see in color, but they have the advantage of
seeing better at night, that is why there's the typical
idea of them only going out at night. Remember they
echolocate.
There's really only two species of bats in NJ, the main
one is
the Brown Bat and
the sub-species is
The Red Bat. If you know of
bats in your area just make sure that they don't nest in
or on any habitable structures. Not your house, garage
or sheds. There are "bat houses" that you can buy in
Home Depot or your local pet store and can be installed
ON your unattached garage. Keep bats away from
the house. Well known facts about the Brown Bat and The
Red Bat is that they are 100% insect eaters, and are
definitely beneficial animals by eating more insects
than any other animal every night. Brown bats are gentle
and intelligent animals and usually have one pup per
year. They are successful, helpful animals, usually very
unobtrusive and most people don't realize it.
Possible DangersIf
you are afraid that bats are nesting in your home, most
likely it will be largely visible to you when the
population of them in you house gets heavy. The heavy
population brings multi-disease danger from the large
accumulation of their droppings. Bats, nesting somewhere
in your house, will be largely invisible to you, until
the population gets heavy. The danger is actually small,
but no matter how small, it's never good for it to be in
your home.
Obviously, if you are bitten by any animal, you should
always seek medical assistance immediately. Also, if the
animal is available, it should also be held for tests.
The symptoms of rabies increase faster if the bite is
closer to the head. Rabies first affects the brain and
the spinal cord and eventually causes death in any
animal. Since the subject of rabies was well known in
large animals like dogs, cats, raccoons and skunks it
has been reduced because they are easier to spot. Bats,
however, are invisible to most people and that makes it
difficult to treat them in case of rabies.
