Hornet
removal and control services in NJ
Hornets are the large wasps that
can measure up to 45 mm in length. True hornets make up
the genus vespa.
Hornets usually come around a lot in the warmer
temperatures. Female hornets measure from 25 to 35 mm
long. The male hornets are actually smaller. The nest
they build is composed of hardened paste from tree bark
masticated with their saliva. The nest measures 30 to 40
centimeters in diameter and contains the most a few
hundred hornets. As the colony size grows, new combs are
added, and an envelope is built around the cell layers,
until the nest is entirely covered, with the exception
of an entry hole. At the peak of its population the
colony can reach a size of 700 workers. This occurs in
late summer. Hornet colonies die out in the winter only
the fertilized ones survive over a winter period.
The queen hornets appear in mid-Aril and are active
until the mid of October. They feed by making holes in
ripe fruits, usually grapes to obtain sugar, they love
sugar.
The hornet sting can sometimes be
dangerous
for domestic animals and human beings. *However the
sting toxicity varies greatly by hornet species - from a
typical sting, to among the most venomous known insects.
Allergic reactions can occur; these may result in death
depending on the severity.
